A Better Career Thanks To A Grant

Jun 11, 2010

When I was about eighteen or so a lot of my friends started having babies.  I saw how hard it was for them to raise a child, most of them on their own.  The struggle to make ends meet was not something I wanted to deal with at that point in my life.  I decided to wait until I was older and married.  That way I wouldn’t be alone and struggling.  Well, life is not always what you plan it to be.  I did wait to have kids when I was older and married.  But, then my husband died unexpectedly.  This left me with two small children to care for and nurture on my own.  I realized that I needed a way to support my small family.  In order to get a good job I needed some specialized training.  How was I going to afford school and keep my kids fed and clothed at the same time?  A friend of mine worked for the government and let me know that there were certain programs that offered a grant for single moms.  This grant money could be used to pay for school or cover living expenses while in school.  I set to work researching these grant programs.  I found the one that was right for me and quickly applied for it.  It took about six months for all the paperwork to be processed but in the end it was worth it.  I now have a degree in nursing.  I am able to work only three days a week while caring for my family.  I am so glad I was informed of these grant programs.  I am also glad that I took positive action to improve my life and thus, the life of my children.
